Pioneering Discussions at the Inaugural Annual Cybersecurity Indaba

On October 24, 2024, the Cybersecurity Indaba made its mark as a landmark event at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria, bringing together over 150 experts, professionals, and enthusiasts under the theme “Cyber Resilience in the Digital Age: Safeguarding South Africa’s Future.” Organized by CyberM8 Initiative NPC, the Indaba spotlighted critical cybersecurity issues, showcasing a broad spectrum of insights and strategies aimed at strengthening the nation’s cyber infrastructure.

Keynote Spotlight The event kicked off with an inspiring keynote from Molehe Wesi of .ZADNA, who emphasized the need for robust cybersecurity measures to protect and future-proof South Africa’s digital landscape. Wesi’s address set the tone for a day packed with expert discussions and strategic networking.

Distinguished Speakers and Panelists The Indaba featured a lineup of distinguished speakers, including Samuel Lefophane from CSIR, Thulani Mabuza from Orange Cyber Defense, and cybersecurity expert Wayne Poggenpoel. Each brought unique perspectives on topics ranging from AI in cybersecurity to ethical hacking and policy development.

Neil Dundas of the ZA Registry Consortium delved into DNS abuse, while Sipho Mtombeni from Google South Africa discussed the role of big tech in fostering cyber-safe environments. The academic viewpoint was strongly represented by Prof. Sizwe Lindelo Snail ka Mtuze and Prof. Elmarie Kritzinger, who discussed the intersection of cybersecurity education and policy.

Partnerships that Empower The success of the Indaba was bolstered by strategic partnerships with key stakeholders like The Innovation Hub, Geekulcha, CSIR, Inpassion Cybersecurity, Cyber-Clinique and LuminaLeap Technologies. These collaborations underscored the collective effort to advance South Africa’s cybersecurity agenda.

Innovative Solutions and Forward Thinking One of the highlights of the event was the focus on innovative cybersecurity solutions tailored to South African businesses and individuals. Discussions also covered strategies to empower youth and SMMEs, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary tools and knowledge to navigate the cyber world securely.

Looking Ahead The CyberM8 team, led by Thabang Phala, along with the dedicated professionals Manqoba Mngomezulu, Doreen Mokoena, and Sphokazi Ngobese, ensured the event not only addressed current issues but also set the stage for ongoing dialogue and action.

The Indaba closed with an announcement of the next event slated for October 30-31, 2025, promising even deeper insights into cybersecurity challenges and innovations.
