On the 5th of March 2025, at the Stakeholder Consultation Session hosted by the Information Regulator, CyberM8’s Chief Empowerment Officer (CEO), Thabang Phala, delivered a compelling address on the critical need for collaborative efforts in cybersecurity awareness.

Thabang began by commending Mr. Dimba and the Edu Com Division within the Information Regulator for their extensive and impactful work. He highlighted the importance of supporting such initiatives, emphasizing that while their efforts are evident on platforms like LinkedIn, broader community participation and support are still lacking.

Representing CyberM8, a leading organisation in cybersecurity awareness, Thabang shared insights on CyberM8’s commitment to driving cybersecurity education across South Africa. He reflected on the success of the Inaugural Cybersecurity Indaba, held in October 2024, where experts from CSIR and other key stakeholders came together to discuss pressing cybersecurity issues. He also announced that the second edition of the Indaba is set to take place this year, furthering CyberM8’s mission to educate and empower communities.

Thabang stressed the importance of upskilling Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) as key players in disseminating cybersecurity knowledge to communities. He urged CSOs present at the session to actively participate in ongoing cybersecurity awareness programs, including a regional initiative by the UK Government taking place from the 4th to the 6th of March 2025, which focuses on cybersecurity education for civil society groups in Southern Africa.

Highlighting the need to reach grassroots communities, Thabang pointed out how Botswana has made significant strides in engaging traditional leaders in cybersecurity awareness, something South Africa should strive to emulate. He underscored that traditional leaders, schools, and local community structures play a pivotal role in ensuring that cybersecurity education reaches those who need it most.

As part of his call to action, Thabang invited organisations and service providers to collaborate with CyberM8 in expanding these awareness campaigns. He emphasized that CyberM8, alongside its network of experts, is well-positioned to contribute meaningfully to national efforts in cybersecurity education.

CyberM8 remains committed to equipping South Africans with the knowledge and tools needed to stay safe online, particularly young people and vulnerable communities. By working together, we can create a more cyber-secure society.
